A roadtrip through the Saxon villages — Viscri, Biertan, Saschiz and more
A slow journey through fortified churches, pastel houses, rolling hills and one of Europe's most atmospheric cultural landscapes.
A Saxon village roadtrip is one of the most beautiful ways to understand Transylvania.
Not as a checklist. As a rhythm.
You drive from church tower to church tower, from village gate to village gate, through hills that change colour with the seasons. The fortified churches are the visible landmarks, but the real magic lies between them: tiled roofs, old barns, orchards, meadows, small bridges, quiet courtyards and the feeling that each village has kept a slightly different version of the same story.
Why a roadtrip beats a day trip
Day-trippers see the churches. Roadtrippers see the villages.
A day trip from Brașov hits two or three landmarks, all under harsh midday light, all with a crowd. A four-day roadtrip catches the early light, the empty courtyards, the priest still unlocking the church door, the orchard on the back road, the dinner cooked by the host two villages over.
A four-day route
Day 1 — Brașov to Viscri (via Prejmer and Rupea). Drive out in the morning. Stop at Prejmer Fortified Church (UNESCO; 272 family chambers built into the walls). Continue past Rupea Citadel on the hilltop, stop only if you want a view. Arrive at Casa Saxonia in Viscri before dusk. Walk the village before dinner.
Day 2 — Viscri. Slow day. The fortified church at 9am before any visitors. Lunch at Viscri 32. Walk to the next village (Buneșți) or take a horse cart with one of the Roma drivers. Dinner in the courtyard.
Day 3 — Viscri to Sighișoara (via Saschiz). Short drive west. Saschiz church at 11am, the tallest tower in the Saxon Triangle. Lunch at the village inn. Continue to Sighișoara. Climb the Clock Tower at sunset.
Day 4 — Sighișoara to Sibiu (via Biertan and Valea Viilor). Drive south. Biertan Fortified Church (the seat of the Saxon Lutheran bishop for 300 years; the famous 13-tumbler lock). Lunch at Unglerus in Biertan. Continue via Valea Viilor (UNESCO, often empty). Arrive Sibiu late afternoon. Dinner at Crama Sibiul Vechi.
When to go
Late May, June, September, and the first half of October. July and August can be hot in the valleys. The light in late September turns the hayfields gold and the air is dry. February is its own kind of beautiful if you have warm boots.

Practical tips
The roads are mostly tarmac now, with unpaved last-kilometres in some villages. A normal car is fine. Distances are short: the whole Saxon Triangle fits inside an hour's drive any direction.
Call ahead for the fortified churches outside the famous three. Many of them are kept locked and the priest opens by appointment. We will make the call for you if you book through us.
Do not rush this route. The point is not to see everything. The point is to let the villages work on you.
