The Transfăgărășan, by bicycle, in early September

A two-day route from Bâlea Lake down to the Saxon villages — written for cyclists, but useful for anyone curious about Romania's most famous road.

Top Gear called the Transfăgărășan the best road in the world. They drove it in a Lamborghini in summer. That is one way. Another way is in early September, on a steel-frame touring bike, with two panniers and a sandwich from a tiny bakery in Cârțișoara. The road opens in late June and closes again in early November, and there is a four-week window in early autumn where the larch turns gold above 1,800 metres and the morning fog sits in the valley below you like a sea.
