The castle the Dracula myth attached itself to — better visited at 9am than at noon.
Bran Castle was not Vlad the Impaler's home and was never lived in by Bram Stoker. But it has the silhouette: a steep limestone cliff, narrow corkscrew passages, a turret that catches the morning fog. The interior is now a museum to Queen Marie of Romania, who restored it in the 1920s — that part is more interesting than the Dracula gift shop at the bottom.

A timber lodge at 1,360m on the saddle between Bucegi and Piatra Craiului — wide skies, no neighbours.

A modernist mountain villa with a clear view of the Piatra Craiului ridge.
