Bucovina
The painted-monastery north-east — Voroneț blue on exterior walls that survived 500 winters.
About the region
Bucovina occupies the north-east of Romania, in the foothills of the eastern Carpathians. Its claim is the painted monasteries of Voroneț, Sucevița, Moldovița, Humor and Arbore — built in the 15th and 16th centuries, with frescos covering not just interiors but the entire exterior walls. The "blue of Voroneț" is a pigment recipe that has never been fully reproduced. The villages around them keep a particular gentleness — eggs are still hand-painted, sheepskin coats are still made by hand.
