Bârsana Wooden Monastery
A timber monastery whose spire is the tallest wooden tower in Europe.
About
Bârsana is one of eight Maramureș wooden churches on the UNESCO list. The complex is newer — most of it rebuilt by hand from the 1990s onward by a single nun, Mother Filofteia — but in entirely traditional fashion: oak shingles, hand-pegged joints, a 57-metre spire that is the tallest wooden tower in Europe. The garden is one of the prettiest in the country.
