Maramureș

The wooden-church north — tall shingled spires, hand-carved gates, and a graveyard that laughs at death.

About the region

Maramureș sits in the far north of Romania, against the Ukrainian border. It is a region where everyday life still uses what the forest gives — oak gates carved with rope motifs, churches built without a single nail, the steam-driven Mocănița forestry railway still running through the Vaser valley. The Săpânța "Merry Cemetery" — bright blue crosses with rhyming, often funny epitaphs — is its most famous oddity. Eight of the wooden churches are UNESCO. Outside our main coverage, but we route guests here with trusted local partners.
