Merry Cemetery, Săpânța

A graveyard of bright blue crosses with rhyming, often funny epitaphs — Romania at its most disarming.

About

In 1935 a local woodworker named Stan Ioan Pătraș started carving wooden crosses in a particular blue with a portrait of the deceased and a short rhyming verse that summed up their life — sometimes tender, often hilariously honest ("Here lies my mother-in-law / would she rest three more days / and I would rest myself with her"). Over 800 crosses now, his apprentice still carving the new ones in the same workshop next door.
