You descend a wooden staircase 50 metres into a circular limestone shaft. At the bottom is ice — a permanent glacier roughly 4,000 years old, layered like a section of tree-trunk. Temperatures inside hover around 1°C even in August. Bring warm layers and grippy shoes. Go early; the bus tours arrive at eleven.
