Saschiz is one of the UNESCO Saxon villages, with a particularly tall fortified church whose bell still rings the village hours. Casa Lavandă is at the quiet end, a five-minute walk from the church. The garden runs back almost to the old defensive ditch. There is a single fibre line into the village — Iulia installed her end of it personally.
The desk. Iulia took the door off an old armoire, put it on two trestles in the south-facing window, and made the best writing desk we have ever sat at in this country. The Wi-Fi is honest 200 Mbps. The chair is a Vitra Eames. The garden grows lavender that ends up in the soap.

A few of the sights within easy reach of this house.
The most photographed Saxon church — three rings of walls, a famous lock with thirteen tumblers.
The highest range in Romania — Moldoveanu (2,544m), bears, the European Wilderness initiative.
The shepherding villages west of Sibiu — UNESCO is considering them as intangible heritage.
A single-room museum of painted glass icons — one of the most surprising small museums in Europe.
